‘Where’s the farm?’ is a participatory education tool in the form of a hydroponic kit. Enabling the next generation of young adults to race to grow root vegetables into a curious shape. There is a huge issue surrounding food waste in the UK: consumers’ high aesthetic standards concerning stereotypical food shapes mean that large amounts of produce are sold at a discount or are discarded before making it to the shelves. It is essential we instead influence perceptions to reduce food waste in ways that do not facilitate food devaluation.

The hydroponic kit intends to derail common misconceptions about the relationship between appearance and quality, by increasing the exposure and familiarity of unusually shaped vegetables with future consumers from a young age. ‘Where’s the farm?’ reduces bias toward produce with less aesthetic beauty by engaging the users with the growing process through forthcoming farming methods used in vertical farms.

The globalisation of food systems has caused us to grow more distant from the food we consume. As the farms of the future are localised but move indoors, understanding and educating about the origins of our food is essential in understanding its true value.

Do you know where your local farm will be in 2040?
